Heat Pumps: What Calgary Homeowners Should Know About the Canada Greener Homes Grant

Canada is one of the greenest countries in the world. Our government has committed to reducing emissions by at least 40% between 2005-2030. Initiatives like the Canada Greener Homes Grant take us a step closer to meeting that goal.

In today’s blog, we're going to talk about the ins and outs of this initiative and how it impacts your heat pump installation and replacement costs. When you work with our team at Harmony Heating, we will help you navigate the entire process: from scheduling the energy audit to applying for the grant.

Why Install a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps use electricity to transfer heat between the outside air and your home. It takes the heat from a source, amplifies it, and then redirects it into your home to keep it warm. Calgary homeowners can use it to warm their homes in the cold Canadian winter climate. In fact,  recent reports show that Canadians can save anywhere between $700-$3,500 annually by making the switch to using heat pumps.

What Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant?

The Canadian government is offering a $5,600 rebate for qualifying heat pump installations through the Greener Homes Grant program.

You can also get grants from $125-$5,000 to recover a portion of the costs of home retrofits. Retrofitting means making changes to building systems to make them more energy efficient, so there are many available eligible possibilities under this broad term.

Some eligible retrofits include but are not limited to:

  • Altering the building envelope

  • Installing solar panels

  • Fitting it with new mechanical systems like HVAC units

  • Correcting pre-existing problems with ventilation systems

  • Creating more home insulation to better resist heat flow

Who Is Eligible for the Grant?

Any Canadian homeowner can participate in this government program. However, you need to provide a property tax bill to prove ownership of the property. You also need a government ID to prove that it is your primary place of residence.

Note that only one member of a primary household can apply.

If you're unsure about your eligibility, you can check whether you meet the conditions on the Canadian government's website.

Landlords and renters are ineligible. Homes that were built fewer than six months ago also cannot apply for the program, though these homeowners can apply after the six-month period. You also cannot apply if you have already begun or finished the retrofitting process before getting an EnerGuide evaluation.

Applying for the Grant: A Step-By-Step Guide

To apply for the grant:

  1. Choose a quality service professional like Harmony Heating & Air Conditioning Inc.
