Did you know that keeping your outdoor air conditioning unit clean and free of debris can help it run more efficiently and prevent it from overheating? With summer just around the corner, here’s a short guide on how to keep it in top condition.
A step-by-step guide to cleaning your outdoor AC unit
Before you start, make sure your AC unit is switched off. Look for an exterior shut-off box on the unit and turn the power off at the breaker box located inside your home or garage. Once you’ve done this, you can complete the following five steps:
1. Remove large pieces of debris
Use a screwdriver or wrench to remove the fan grill from the top of the unit. Once it’s open, remove any large pieces of debris such as leaves, grass clippings and twigs with gloved hands.
2. Clean and straighten the fins
Use a garden hose to clean the fins from the inside out. If you notice any bent fins, carefully straighten them using a butter knife or fin comb.
3. Apply coil cleaner
Spray the inside of the unit with coil cleaner. Allow the coil cleaner to foam up and soak into the coils to break down any stubborn dirt. After 15 minutes, use a garden hose to rinse off the coil cleaner and replace the fan grill.
4. Tidy around the unit
Rake away any leaves and debris that may have piled up around the outside of the unit. You should also cut back branches and vegetation at least two feet in all directions to ensure proper airflow.
5. Level the unit
Over time, the concrete pad that your AC unit sits on can begin to tip as the soil beneath it settles. If your unit is leaning, use a few rot-resistant shims to bring it back to level.
If you hear strange noises coming from your AC unit or notice any damage, you should contact your local HVAC technician immediately.
