air conditioner

Do you rely on your air conditioner to keep you cool and comfortable during the summer months?  If so, you should know that your AC needs to be properly maintained in order to continue functioning properly. However, even with proper maintenance, replacement will eventually be necessary when the machine reaches the end of its lifespan.

Here are some factors to consider when deciding whether you should repair or replace your AC:

  • How old the unit is. Generally, an air conditioner will last 10 to 15 years. If your AC is nearing the end of its lifespan, repairing it may not be worthwhile. Additionally, due to advances in technology, a new unit is likely to be more efficient and cost less to run.
  • Whether it uses R-22 Freon. This once common refrigerant is known to be a dangerous, ozone-depleting substance. As such, the Government of Canada banned the sale of all Freon-based products and Freon itself will be made illegal in the coming years. If your AC unit uses R-22 and develops a leak, you won’t be able to purchase new Freon to top your system up.
  • How often it breaks down. If your air conditioner regularly needs repairs, it may be time to replace your unit. A machine that constantly has problems is reaching the end of its usable lifespan. Additionally, frequent repairs can be costly, and an AC replacement may save you money in the long run.
  • The cost of repair. If you’re still not sure if you should fix or replace your AC unit, an HVAC specialist can give you an idea as to how much a repair will cost. This will allow to compare the price of a replacement versus the cost of a repair. A simple, inexpensive fix is usually worth it, especially if your unit is still relatively new. However, if the repair will cost as much as a replacement, it’s better to invest your dollars in a new air conditioner.
