HOW HEAT PUMPS WORK
Heat pumps are electric heating and cooling devices comprised of two units: an outdoor and an indoor unit. Heat pumps operate on the basic principle that heat naturally moves from warm areas to cooler areas.
To heat your home, the heat pump absorbs the heat from outside, turns it into a gas, and compresses it to make it even hotter. This hot gas then moves into the indoor unit, where it passes through coils that heat your indoor air. The system can be reversed to cool your home: the heat from inside will be absorbed, compressed, and moved outside.
ARE HEAT PUMPS APPROPRIATE FOR CALGARY?
Heat pumps are an effective and efficient way to heat your Calgary home in the winter and keep it cool in the summer. However, although heat pumps can effectively defrost and remove ice build-up in the winter, they do require a back-up heating system for extremely cold temperatures (below -30◦C). This can be in the form of a dual fuel system that allows for the most efficient heating across all ranges of weather and temperatures.
A dual-fuel system uses a heat pump until the cold temperatures make it more efficient to heat with gas. The system then switches over to gas furnace heating for the duration of the cold snap. Once the outside temperature returns to a degree at which the heat pump can be used efficiently, the system switches back to the electric heat pump. This allows you to maximize your heating and minimize your utility bills and your carbon footprint.
A fully electric solution for extremely cold temperatures is to choose a heat pump that is equipped with built-in electric resistance heating elements that can provide enough warmth to get you and your household comfortably through the cold snap.

Assessment and sizing. Factors like climate, insulation and the size of your home play a crucial role in determining the right-sized heat pump. Oversized or undersized units can lead to inefficiency and discomfort.
Choosing the right type. You can choose an air-source or ground-source (geothermal) heat pump. The choice depends on budget, space availability and long-term energy savings goals. Look for “cold climate” models suitable for use in Canadian winters. These could be dual-fuel or electric-only models.
Location and placement. Heat pumps require an outdoor unit and an indoor air handler. Outdoor units should be sheltered from extreme weather conditions, and indoor units should be strategically located for even distribution of conditioned air.
Ductwork. Heat pumps can be integrated into the system in homes with ductwork. A ductless mini-split system may be a better choice if ducts are absent.
Electrical and plumbing connections. A heat pump requires electrical and plumbing connections. A licensed technician should handle these connections to ensure safety and compliance with local codes.
A Harmony Heating & Air Conditioning Inc comfort pro can help you assess your heating and cooling needs and choose the best heat pump and secondary heat source for your home.
Our HVAC experts will consider these factors before recommending and installing a heat pump for your Calgary home.
